What Constitutes a Dental Emergency?

A dental emergency is any situation requiring prompt care from a dental professional to relieve pain, save a tooth, or treat an infection. If you are unsure, it is always better to call, and we are happy to guide you.

To determine whether you’re experiencing a dental emergency, ask yourself the following questions:

  • Is there severe, persistent tooth pain?
  • Have you chipped, fractured, or damaged a tooth?
  • Do you have a knocked-out or displaced tooth?
  • Are you experiencing gum swelling or an abscessed tooth?
  • Have you lost a crown or filling?
  • Have you had an injury to your lips, tongue, or gums?

If you are experiencing a dental emergency, call us right away at 940-233-6995. We will work to get you in the same day. If the emergency occurs outside of our office hours, please call for guidance. Our team will evaluate your situation and offer guidance on the next steps until we can see you.

Please note: if you are experiencing a life-threatening emergency such as difficulty breathing, severe swelling affecting your airway, or uncontrolled bleeding, call 911 or go to your nearest emergency room immediately.

Tips for Common Dental Emergencies

The following are some of the most common dental emergencies and things you can do before seeing our emergency dentist:

  • Severe Toothache: Rinse with warm water and take over-the-counter pain medication as directed on the label. Avoid placing aspirin directly against the gum or tooth to avoid further damage. Persistent pain is often a sign of infection or nerve involvement, so it’s important to seek evaluation. Make sure to call us for prompt care.
  • Cracked or Broken Tooth: Rinse with warm water. Apply a cold compress to the outside of the face if there is swelling. Save any broken fragments and bring them with you to your emergency appointment. Even small cracks can worsen quickly if left untreated, so early care is key.
  • Knocked-Out Permanent Tooth: Handle the affected tooth by the crown, not the root. Rinse it gently without scrubbing and try to return it to its socket. If that's not possible, keep it moist by placing it in some milk or saliva. Time is critical. Seeing a dentist within 30–60 minutes offers the best chance of saving the tooth. Make sure to call us right away.
  • Abscess or Facial Swelling: An abscess or facial swelling is a sign of infection that requires prompt attention. If the swelling is severe and spreading, especially near the eye or neck, head to your nearest emergency room.
  • Lost Crown or Filling: A lost crown or filling can leave the underlying tooth structure vulnerable to harmful bacteria. Use temporary dental cement from a pharmacy or sugar-free gum to protect the area until we see you.
  • Soft Tissue Injuries (Lip, Tongue, or Gum): Apply gentle pressure to slow bleeding. If bleeding does not slow within 15 to 20 minutes, head to your nearest emergency room.
